Depleted Caps still take Metro care of business — 4-2 over Devils

Missing regulars on the blue line and down the middle, Washington scored four straight and leaned on Logan Thompson’s third-period work to beat New Jersey at Capital One Arena.

Short-handed Caps still solve a Metro afternoon

WASHINGTON — The preview wrote itself as a scarcity story. By late afternoon Saturday, it was a depth story with a final: Capitals 4, Devils 2 at Capital One Arena.

Washington entered the matinee without defensemen Matt Roy (lower body) and Rasmus Sandin (knee), and without centers Pierre-Luc Dubois and Justin Sourdif (illness). Dubois went on injured reserve Saturday. Hershey call-up Jonny Brodzinski drew in. None of that changed the Metro math once the puck dropped — New Jersey was still the third Metropolitan visitor into the building this season, and the Caps still had to manage speed through the neutral zone with a thinner blue line.

They did enough of it to take four unanswered goals and leave with back-to-back wins.

How the lead flipped

Arseny Gritsyuk opened for New Jersey at 10:04 of the first. Ryan Leonard answered late in the period on the power play with an end-to-end rush — coast to coast, through traffic, deke on Jake Allen — for his third goal of the year. Coach Spencer Carbery told NHL.com he expects that clip to live all season.

The second period belonged to Washington. Ilya Protas finished a saucer from Alex Ovechkin at 1:16. Dylan Strome scored his first of the season at 4:36 off work from Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou. Boone Jenner made it 4-1 at 11:14, his fourth goal in five games since arriving in Washington.

Timo Meier’s late power-play strike made the scoreboard honest at 4-2. The save that mattered most was the pile in front of that: Logan Thompson stopped 29 shots, 16 in a third period when the Devils outshot the Caps 17-5. Carbery said those early-third Grade-A looks never became a 4-2 game with 16 minutes left because Thompson erased them.

What DMV should watch next

This was not a healthy roster flex. It was a stress test of who can center a line when Dubois is IR’d, who can soak minutes when Roy and Sandin are out, and whether Thompson’s calm travels on nights when Capitals structure frays for a period. Ovechkin’s helper moved him within one of Nicklas Backstrom for the franchise assist record, per NHL.com notes — a side plot on a day defined by call-ups and absences.

Philadelphia still sits on the homestand calendar later this month. Until the infirmary clears, every Metro date will look a little like Saturday: can Washington’s available group slow a fast visitor and get enough finish from Leonard, Jenner, and the new middle?
