Reaction: Daniels’ cold half, defense keeps Week 1 alive

Two reactions from a 24-22 loss

Sport DMV’s breaking final locked Eagles 24, Commanders 22. The room split into two honest takes.

Jayden Daniels — not the night he wanted

Daniels finished 18-of-34 for 164 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. The volume looks fine until you stack the first half: public wires had him around 6-of-16 before the break, with multiple three-and-outs across the afternoon. Completions came late — Stefon Diggs and rookie Antonio Williams found the end zone in the fourth — but the early schedule was behind the sticks too often for a road opener in the NFC East.

We’re not inventing postgame quotes. The tape and the box already say: inefficient early, competitive late, short of the tying conversion.

Defense — better than the early panic suggested

Philadelphia led early, but Washington’s defense never let this become a 35-10 afternoon. Saquon Barkley finished with 83 yards on 15 carries — productive, not unchecked. The Eagles’ offense cooled after the opening push; the Commanders stayed within one or two scores deep into the fourth and forced Philly to cash a late stop on the two-point try.

That’s the surprise relative to “road opener vs. the defending champs” dread: the defense kept the math alive. The offense’s early stalls are what made the late scramble necessary.
