Commanders vs Dolphins: what to watch Friday night
First preseason grade at Northwest Stadium — Coleman at left tackle, depth-chart names on the clock, and a Dolphins week that already started in Ashburn.
August 12, 2026
Friday night is the first public grade
The Washington Commanders host the Miami Dolphins in the preseason opener Friday, Aug 14 at 7 p.m. ET at Northwest Stadium in Landover. For Sport DMV, this isn’t a throwaway exhibition — it’s the first time this camp’s fights get a scoreboard in front of a home crowd.
Ashburn already hosted Miami for a joint practice this week (believed to be the first joint practice on those grounds). Friday moves the same matchup under the lights. Starters may not play long — or at all — in a preseason opener. The evaluation still matters: who earns snaps, who looks ready, and whether the blind side holds when the pads are live.
Blind side, not vibes
Laremy Tunsil is out for the season with a torn triceps. Brandon Coleman is the left tackle plan — sliding from the guard competition into the starting blind side after an offseason the staff has described as strong work for that role.
Watch Friday for the simple grade: how clean is Jayden Daniels early, and does the line look like “next man up” or next man exposed? Joint practice reps against Miami’s edge already put Coleman under the microscope. The game is the public version of that test — even if the snaps are limited.
Names on the depth chart that matter this week
Unofficial depth charts don’t set the 53. They set the argument the HTTR desk can’t drop.
Luke McCaffrey as WR3, the Hartman / Kaliakmanis quarterback depth fight, and the young skill players Locked On and Commanders Kings have been highlighting all week — Friday is when those camp names get real snaps or get exposed as bubble talk. Preseason Week 1 is for the roster middle as much as the starters.
What Ashburn already told us
Wednesday’s joint practice was the bridge. Local creators treated it as more valuable than a short Friday starter package for some evaluations — live reps against another roster before the opener.
Sport DMV’s Creators desk is full of that week’s tape: camp confidentials, depth-chart reacts, joint-practice previews. Use it. We’re not rewriting national takes — we’re framing what DMV fans should watch when the ball is kicked Friday night.

Quick watch list
- Coleman at LT — pocket cleanliness early; communication with the edge
- Depth / bubble names — who actually plays, and who disappears
- Secondary and young skill — camp noise vs live reps
- Tempo / identity — even in limited starter packages, what does Blough’s offense look like under lights?
How Sport DMV will cover it
We’ll post notes after the whistle and keep the Creators desk pointed at the best local reaction. If you only open one Sport DMV tab this weekend, make it the Friday night / Saturday morning recap — and keep Creators bookmarked for the HTTR feed.
Join free, pin the Commanders, and make this the second tab after the scoreboard.
