Commanders on bye: last in the East, and the climb still runs through November

Washington is 1-4-1 after San Francisco. Giants lead at 4-2-1. Next is Philadelphia on Nov. 1 — 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC — with the East still unfinished.

Last place is still a living place

Bye weeks are where bad teams write speeches and good teams fix first downs. The Commanders are 1-4-1, last in the NFC East, coming off a 17-23 loss at San Francisco that started 23-3 the wrong way. The East around them: Giants 4-2-1, Eagles and Cowboys 2-4 with Monday night still to play.

That is not a sealed coffin. It is a soft division that will punish anyone who waits for the standings to gift a path. Washington is 0-2-1 in NFC East games. Until that flips, “we’re still alive” is a calendar fact, not a résumé.

What the open week is for

Adam Peters and Dan Quinn have already owned the late-game decision-making that burned the 49ers night — including the fourth-down throwaway after a flag (SI / Junkies radio notes). The defensive first-down success rate has been an NFL-worst problem before third down even arrives. Those are bye-week agenda items, not vibes.

Health matters: Terry McLaurin’s status after the San Francisco game is a November variable. Confirm the weekly injury report as Nov. 1 approaches — Sport DMV will not invent designations here.

The next three that matter most

1. Nov. 1 vs Philadelphia (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC). Rematch of the Week 1 road loss. Philly may arrive off Monday Night Football against Dallas and without Jalen Hurts for the season. That does not make it easy — it makes it available.

2. Nov. 8 vs Los Angeles Rams (1 p.m. ET, FOX). A measuring stick against a club that can still punch upward in the NFC.

3. Nov. 12 vs New York Giants (TNF, Prime). The East leader on a short week — the kind of game that either reopens the scramble or ends the polite conversation.

Win two of those three and the soft-East story becomes a Washington story again. Lose the lot and the bye was just a quiet week before a long winter.
