Almost a heist — then the MRI week begins

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Commanders spent the first half looking overmatched and the second half looking dangerous. It still ended 23-17 to the undefeated 49ers, and it still ended with the wrong kind of silence around Terry McLaurin.

San Francisco led 20-3 by late in the second after Brock Purdy found George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey scored twice on the ground (one extra point missed). Washington managed almost nothing before halftime, including a fourth-and-2 from the 13 when Jayden Daniels threw the ball away. Dan Quinn’s postgame read was blunt: too much time battling themselves against a tough roster.

Then the second half flipped. Daniels threw two touchdown passes and finished with 300 yards; the deficit shrank to 23-17. With 1:54 left, Malik Mustapha broke up a fourth-down throw to Treylon Burks near the goal line. Washington got one last possession to the 28 before an intentional grounding penalty and a final sack ended it.

McLaurin’s exit will outlast the box score. He went down in the first quarter on a route, needed an air cast on the left leg, and left on a cart. Quinn said the club fears the injury could be significant and pointed to further testing Tuesday. National reporting Tuesday morning (NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport) said Washington fears a serious, possibly season-ending knee injury ahead of the MRI — treat that as a reporting note, not a club medical release. Javon Kinlaw also exited with a knee issue in the first half.

Washington is 1-4-1 and enters the bye. Next scheduled game: Philadelphia at home on Nov. 1. The roster questions — especially at receiver if McLaurin is out long — start now, not in Ashburn’s week-of meetings.
