Mystics lock No. 5 seed — 101-93 over Sky; Atlanta on Sunday

Final — Washington 101, Chicago 93

The Washington Mystics beat the Chicago Sky 101-93 on Thursday, Sep. 24 at Capital One Arena in their regular-season finale (AP).

Washington led 31-16 after one and 79-60 entering the fourth. Chicago cut it to 95-91 before Kiki Iriafen’s bucket with 39 seconds left (AP) — the kind of late answer that closes a season the right way. Sonia Citron led with 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists; Iriafen finished 16 and 15. The Mystics owned the glass 44-27, with Shakira Austin grabbing 11.

The finish line: 28-16, a franchise-best 28 regular-season wins (Washington Post), and the No. 5 seed. First round vs No. 4 Atlanta opens Sunday (AP: Mystics play at Atlanta). Stretched finish: 7 of 8 and 16 of 19 (AP); 3-0 vs Chicago this year.

Sport DMV read

Twenty-eight wins and a No. 5 seed is the floor this Mystics year earned — now the road opens in Atlanta. Watch how Cap One’s finale energy travels south; the regular-season series and late-season surge buy belief, not a free pass in a best-of-three.
