Led late, lost anyway

The San Diego Padres beat the Washington Nationals 5-4 on Tuesday, Sep. 8 at Petco Park.

Washington led 3-0 into the seventh and 4-1 in the eighth after Yohandy Morales and pinch-hitter Andrés Chaparro went deep and Brady House doubled in two. Then the bullpen cracked: Jared Simpson walked the bases loaded; Erik Tolman (0-1) inherited the mess. A sacrifice fly, a passed ball, Manny Machado’s two-run single, and Luis Campusano’s broken-bat RBI single flipped it. Adrian Morejon locked the ninth (third save).

The loss is Washington’s sixth straight. The Nationals are 67-80 and alone in last in the NL East (a game behind the Mets). San Diego is 77-68.

Wednesday closes the set: Jackson Kent (1-3, 5.55), recalled Tuesday, vs Walker Buehler (8-6, 4.56). Confirm first pitch and the NATS window — Petco afternoon local time. The Nationals page is the hub.
