Quinn’s goal-line half: take the field goal when you get the ball back anyway

First-and-goal at the Dallas 1 with timeouts left — three incompletions, no chip-shot FG, and Washington still gets the second-half kickoff. Halftime: Cowboys 17, Commanders 10.

The call

Washington drove it to the Dallas 1 at the end of the first half and burned the clock — and the timeouts — chasing a touchdown that never came.

From the ESPN play-by-play (Commanders’ final first-half drive, result: End of Half):

  • 0:12 — 1st-and-goal at the 1: incomplete (McLaurin); Durant hurt
  • 0:08 — 2nd-and-goal: incomplete (Dyami Brown)
  • 0:03 — 3rd-and-goal: incomplete under pressure from Jonathan Bullard; Jayden Daniels injured on the play
  • 0:00 — End of half

No field-goal attempt. Score stays Cowboys 17, Commanders 10.

Why it’s a bad half decision

Washington kicked off to open the game (Stevens), which means the Commanders receive the second-half kickoff. You’re getting the ball back to start the third quarter either way.

So the math at the Dallas 1 with under 15 seconds isn’t “TD or bust.” It’s:

  • Kick the chip-shot → walk into halftime 17-13, then get the ball to open Q3
  • Keep throwing → risk a zero, risk a turnover vibe, and — as it happened — leave your QB on the ground

Three cracks from the 1. Zero points. And the possession after the break was already yours.

That’s not aggressive. That’s stubborn with the wrong leverage.

What we’re not inventing

We’re not inventing a 4th-down snap that isn’t on the feed. ESPN’s drive ends after the 3rd-down incomplete and the half. The coaching critique is the sequence: with timeouts already spent and the 1-yard line in hand, the points were sitting there — and the second-half kickoff was already spoken for.

Daniels’ injury on that last throw is a separate gut-punch. It’s also what happens when you keep the offense on the field for one more zero instead of taking three.

Halftime board

  • Dallas 17, Washington 10
  • Commanders get the ball to open the third
  • Watching return status on Daniels
