Commanders at Lions: what to watch Saturday at noon

First road preseason grade at Ford Field — backup QB snaps without Mariota, the OL fight after camp closed, and Drew Stevens as the named kicker.

August 20, 2026

Noon in Detroit, not a Friday night at Northwest

The Washington Commanders’ next public grade is Saturday, Aug. 22, noon ET at Ford Field against the Detroit Lions — the middle preseason game on the team’s own schedule, and the only one this August that is not paired with a joint practice.

Ashburn’s general-public camp window closed Wednesday. This piece is the practical week-ahead for DMV fans: how to watch, what is already on the record, and what Saturday is actually for.

The Commanders team page stays the hub. Bookmark this preview for kickoff.

How to watch (DMV)

  • Kickoff: Saturday, Aug. 22, noon ET
  • Site: Ford Field, Detroit
  • TV: WUSA9 in the Washington market (check local listings elsewhere)
  • Radio: Commanders Radio / BIG 100 network affiliates

Confirm the final package on WUSA / team channels Saturday morning — preseason windows still move.

The quarterback room without Mariota

Marcus Mariota is out the rest of preseason with a sprained MCL. Dan Quinn has said he is optimistic Mariota can be ready for the regular-season start. That is the situation desk, and it is still the banner line.

Saturday is therefore a live look at the rest of the QB depth — Sam Hartman and Athan Kaliakmanis already played when Mariota left the Dolphins opener early. Sport DMV is not inventing a depth chart or a starter package for Detroit. Watch who actually takes the early snaps, and whether the offense still looks like something you can evaluate under a noon kick.

Jayden Daniels’ availability for any given preseason series is a staff decision announced closer to kickoff. Do not treat rumor threads as the inactive list.

Line, depth, and the named kicker

Laremy Tunsil is out for the season. Brandon Coleman remains the left-tackle plan the HTTR desk has been arguing since camp — Saturday is another public sample of whether that blind side holds when the pads are live, even if starter snaps are limited.

Preseason Week 2 is also for the roster middle: who earns snaps after the last open Ashburn practices, and who disappears. Friday’s Dolphins preview framed the same fights at home; Detroit is the road version.

One camp fight is already decided in public. After the Dolphins win, Washington released Jake Moody and named Drew Stevens the starting kicker — Quinn’s line was that Stevens “established himself.” Saturday is the first game with that decision locked. Watch the operation (Way / Ott / Stevens), not invented drama about a competition that the team has already closed.

After Ford Field

The calendar after Saturday is already set on Commanders.com:

  • Wed, Aug. 26 — joint practice vs. the Ravens in Owings Mills (not a public Ashburn camp date)
  • Fri, Aug. 28 — preseason finale at the Ravens, M&T Bank Stadium, on WUSA9

If you only open one Sport DMV tab this weekend besides the scoreboard, make it this preview Saturday morning — and keep Creators bookmarked for the local reaction after the whistle.

*Week-ahead desk, Thursday morning Aug. 20, 2026. Kickoff/TV from the Commanders’ 2026 preseason / joint-practice schedule (all preseason games on WUSA9). Mariota MCL line from Quinn / prior Sport DMV situation desk. Stevens named starter and Moody release from Commanders.com (Aug. 18). No invented practice recaps, quotes, or inactive lists.*
