Daniels: OT clock fail is on me — Commanders turn the page toward 49ers
After the 27-27 Giants tie, Jayden Daniels owns the final overtime sequence — and says the standard has to be higher before Monday night in Santa Clara.

Daniels puts the OT ending on himself
ASHBURN — Six days after Northwest Stadium watched a win slip into a 27-27 overtime tie with the New York Giants, Jayden Daniels stopped parsing the blame chart.
“Ultimately, like, it’s on me at the end,” Daniels said Wednesday, according to the Commanders’ published transcript. He is the one on the field who is supposed to calm the huddle and manage the moment, he said — and he did not meet the standard he holds for himself or the organization.
That is the story DMV fans needed between the chaos of the final OT snap and Monday Night Football in Santa Clara: not another recreation of the clock dying, but the quarterback saying the fail was his to carry.
What he owned
Daniels did not duck the social pile-on. Criticism is “warranted because of what happened,” he said. His process now is blunt: learn it, take accountability, move on. “Won’t happen again.”
He also drew a hard line on the coaching headset debate. Whatever was called from the sideline, he said, he still had to see the situation and finish it. “Don’t even put it on the coaches… I did not do that.”
Coach Dan Quinn had already put the building’s share on himself earlier in the week, telling reporters the communication chain — from him to offensive coordinator David Blough to Daniels — broke down across those final 56 seconds. Blough later echoed the same accountability language. Daniels’ midweek presser did not contradict that; it recentered the player’s job description inside the noise.
Why it still matters for Monday
The Commanders did not lose Sunday. They also did not close. Daniels called the finish a collective miss — offense had chances to put the game away; everyone felt the weight. The next test arrives fast: a hostile Monday night environment against a 49ers team he described as humming and well-coached.
Pre-snap communication, limiting penalties, and running off the ball are the checklist he named. The brace on his left elbow? He said he has embraced it enough that he stopped thinking about it.
Sport DMV already covered the Giants night itself — the OT clock death and the Pluses and the Minuses. This week’s job is simpler and harder: can the same quarterback who owned the mistake run a clean two-minute (and OT) process when the lights are national again?
